All,
I go through about 1000 dollars of bank provided dollar Bill's every few days. My novice skill set has me looking for unique serial numbers. Since I have begun my training, I call it training due to patience required to train my eyes to look quickly scan for anomalies. That being said, I have two beginner questions: 1) other than the serial number are there other things I should be looking for that would make a dollar bill collectable? 2) Out of the $6 to $7 thousand bills I have looked at, zero unique, low or high serials. However I have found 2 notes with * on the back side of the serial,I read that they are replacement notes to replace bills that had printing errors. But other than that, cannot find any information related to their desire as a collectable, thoughts?
Thanks Topekaguy

Those are generally referred to as a "star note". If you search, there are a few existing threads. EDIT - Here is one: Post your star notes!

, Topekaguy. You have the patience of a saint! I'm afraid I would just buy an interesting s/n instead. Of course, it's always good to have buyers out there, eh? Can I ask you, about what percentage of the bills you search are the old-style small portrait ones? Since you're looking quickly, other things to look out for are: misaligned printing, such as the seals, missing printing, ink smears caused during printing, unusual colored seals, silver certificates (that would be 1957 or older), doubled printing. These things can be spotted quickly. More intricate stuff, like mismatched serial numbers or web-fed bills would take more inspection. Best of luck. Keep posting!

Ron,
For me it is all about the hunt, I do look for imperfections but beyond the ones that are known and obvious. Unfortunately I have only been searching rolled coin and dollar bills so the portraits are all the same.
Mis matched serials is not something I have been looking at I still have 600 in 1's from my Friday batch that I will go through again tonight. What are "web-fed" bills?

Hi, Topekaguy. Here is an example of an inking error, very obvious. (You know, I forgot you were looking just at $1's which hasn't had a change in portrait size like the others.) The web-fed $1's are from series 1988, 1993, and 1995. They were printed using a paper roll, 96 notes at a time, instead of the usual 32 per sheet. On the front of the bills, to the lower right of the ONE, where the plate letter and number would normally be, there is just a number. On the back of the bill, to the right of the motto, is the same number. That denotes web-fed bills and they may be worth a small premium. Mismatched s/n's usually involve just one number, sometimes a block letter, that is different, the left from the right. However, it's highly unusual and you may need to search 10,000 bills- or, more- to find one. Yes, it carries a good premium but may not be worth the search.

I was looking up web notes and their recent values and one of the most valuable is the 1988A BL block from district B. A note in VF can go for $50-100.
If you can find a web note with a printing error or a star, then prices will multiply.

Not my note, Coinfrog (wish it were). Just pulled it up for a sample of what to look for.

Most Star notes are spenders but there are some that could command a premium. The are a few on here (myself included) who keep all start notes regardless of condition or worth. I keep mine as a extreme emergency fund for just in case situations.
