Could someone please double check that I'm doing this correctly?

Showa Dynasty which is 1926-1989

48th year of reign

1926 plus 48 equals 1974 EDIT: 1973 first year is zero?

What does the character after the eight mean? EDIT: I've noticed that symbol seems to follow all years

This one is 1981?

Well have you asked them out for coffee yet?

In the Japanese dating, "year one" is written "Gen" which means start or beginning. In Showa's case, year 2 started on January 1, 1927, when he had been in office for about a week. It's a little confusing at first, but just add one *less* than the year to his start date.

And the character is "nen" which means "year". Think of the nlegend as reading "Showa xxth year"

Glad so see others taking interest in Japanese coins!
