This rectangular AE coin weighs 4.08 g and measures 10.5 x 12 mm.

It appears to be similar in shape, weight, and line across the center to the half falus coins of Malwa Sultanate, Mahmud II (AH 916-937 = AD 520-1531) but I haven't been able to match it with any photos in Krause or Zeno. Here are some photos in differing light. If you have any ideas I'd be grateful to hear them.

Thanks for the post, Spence. I just looked through those very interesting coins and some are close but still no match. I think there's a Mohammad or Mahmud on this unidentified coin.

IDENTIFIED with your help, Petrus and Spence. Yes, I searched Zeno earlier and didn't come up with any matches, but could have made the search too tight by weight. Looking over the coins from your search in Zeno the coin in question here looks very similar to M234, a falus of Muhammad (bin Muzaffar) of Malwa, AH 962-964 / AD 1555-1557. The weight is in the range of a half falus. So I am identifying this as a half falus of this ruler, G&G M235. Considering the fact that this coin is quite worn, and considering use of different dies and striking positions on the flan, I think there's a decent match to the photo in G&G of M235. So I'm giving you credit for solving this one. Thank you both for your help again!

Actually on second thought and looking at the photos some more, I'm still uncertain. The word with the two loops looks more like Mahmud to me than Mohammad, but I'm still not matching it up with any coins of Mahmud I or Mahmud II. What do you think?

Looking at some more photos in Zeno and G&G, now I'm thinking it's a pretty good match for G&G M178, a half falus of Mahmud II.
