Hi Everyone, My head is spinning, help is needed please... (sorry this is so long) After spending most of my time on Mercury dimes, I have decided to collect some US Cents, and right now I've gotten sucked into looking for some of the many errors associated with the 2009 "Formative Years", and I figured you guys would be the experts I trust on giving me the low down on searching for this coins. Being 9 years since the 2009 "Formative Years" cent was minted, I feel my chances of locating any of the error coins from regular bank rolls are pretty slim, so like so many, I've been looking on the evil-Bay for additions to my collection. I am asking questions here first to be an informed collector. From what I've read the error varieties for this coin are only from the Philadelphia Mint, is this true? It is my understanding that there are over 100 error varieties just with the "Formative Years" cent, can someone tell me the "best" or more collectable varieties? I am not going to spend the big bucks trying to tract all the varieties down, but maybe what? The top ten or so that I should look for and maybe easily find? I am planning on purchasing a few rolls... I know to look for original mint unopened (unsearched)rolls... I noticed some rolls have fancy tan and white "Formative Years" imprinted rolls, then others claim their red and white "by N.F.STRING n SON CO" rolls are "official." Are both of these correct? If I purchase, say 3 or 4 of these Mint rolls, is there a realistic possibility of finding some of these error varieties, or are they much rarer than that? Is it "all or nothing?" Meaning, either I find a bunch in a roll, or none at all? Seems like these rolls are steadily increasing in price. Here, nine years later, does a price of around $5/roll sound reasonable? They ain't making them anymore. Are these truly rare, or just overhyped? Thank you in advance. I appreciate any and all thoughts. Les

coppercoins.com shows 11 reverse variety from the Denver mint. I can not help you with your other questions.

Alotta questions! I'll give it a shot. "The finger" is the most widely recognized DDR on the 2009P LP2 Formative years. If you look at http://www.coppercoins.com under that parameter, you will see listed ovever 100 varieties. The most popular of course being the "skeleton finger", looks like one in between the thumb and forefinger by the book. Quite a few similar ones too. I must diverge here to ask a pertinent question. What is your reason for searching for these? To flip or collect? Why I ask is the error "market" is very hyped right now with the "get rich schemes"...only ones getting rich are the writers BTW! Yea I know, one in three hundred THOUSAND may find a one of 200,000 possible coins and make six figures. The 2009 is by far NOT but a one to two figure coin, even in high grades. Listed "values" are arbitrary. Real world is what sells, period. So ask yourself, are you willing to risk investment of $5-10 per 50 to sell a glean of 5% for $2 each? That's real world. Now on ewwboy, the hype reigns, suckers abound and smucks are out in force to reel 'em in. Will that BIE die break error coin sold today for $15 be worth the same even in ten years? Doubtful. Never has been that way over the years, why I say today is big hype, have to be reasonable, logical what you do. (It took me 2 1/2 months to sell TWO BU/MS 1957 LWCs w/ diebreaks, for $1.49, shipped) Personally, I found a lot of 2009's in 2013/14 but began noticeably seeing less and less, now, very few and quite nasty. It seems CRHing has cleaned the till on those. Which is why the sales of BU rolls is high now. As to who wraps the rolls, the million dollar question. Are the Fed Distributor wrapped, or individual bank wrapped from bags or worse yet, individually wrapped from searched bags? You can only ask where they came from hoping the seller is honest. The rest is your gut, go with it. I myself wouldn't pay more than $5 a roll, that's 500% markup on a cent! 10 times what a roll value is. Then say you get 6 lesser "finger" varieties, all the same, I can't even sell a verified Wheat cent RPM on a BU/MS coin for $1.29, shipped! Thinkaboudddit!

Thank you for the responses so far... my goal is purely to collect. I am not cut out to even think about selling these or any other coins. I would call myself a coin hoarder, like probably a lot of others here. MAYBE I'd consider to try somehow trading here, but the answer your question, I am a coin collector, not a reseller. Most of my information I have accumulated is from doubledie. I will check out coppercoins, thanks. Sometimes the internet is information overload, I'm just trying to be an informed collector! Can anyone explain how to tell if rolls of this series are from the US Mint? I obviously want unsearched rolls... part of the fun is the search, and I certainly don't want someone's seconds. Would you look primarily at P Mint rolls, or Denver Mint rolls as well? I noticed a lot of sellers on ebay selling P rolls and D rolls together as a set... were they offered from the US Mint this way, perhaps when introduced? Thanks guys! You are my heroes!

That was a great question. I am glad you asked as I have recently addressed this personally and toyed around with the idea of testing the margins. Its important to keep my Numismatic needs met because collecting coins (insert proper term here) keeps me health and sane. Okay, enough with my PSA.
I love Abraham Lincoln, he was a great man and President. As someone who grew up when George Washington and Lincoln birthdays were on seperate days of the week, that meant 2 days off of school, not one as it is now. I like the Bi-Centennial editions. These were the first coins Ive ever purchased, two sealed rolls of the Formative Years, one from Philidelphia, one from Denver and MS65 RB or better. They cost me about twenty dollars online. Now I just stick with unopened Mint Rolls like you mentioned.
Keep looking because they are out here, and you should not have an issue finding them for ten dollars a roll. Ive found them cheap and just buy all ten rolls at a time. Dont forget, or in my case I had no idea, the but 2010 Lincoln Shields are a part as well. Even though he is gone, his values shall still be our defence. I am going to start using the forums again as I've learned alot thanks to Crazybo0 taking the time to help educate me. He has good "stuff" to post in the error and variety department.
Thanks you guys,
Mike H.

Les, usually US Mint produced rolls are marked as such and will be red or blue like mint packs. If its jus a string roll or regular wrap it may be just a Fed depository where the armored car cos get their or even wrap their own.

I was searching through them that year. They are mostly found in the mint roll boxes of the Philly and Denver mints of the LP-2 (formative year Philly rolls) I found nothing the Denver rolls that I checked. So most of the Denver rolls I have I never opened. Don't plan to either as the ones I did, nothing was found in them. I have a three ring binder of these extras I found. The value was way over priced for these back then. So when you found them, they were a hard sell. Most people were looking to find and sell them. Hardly anyone collected all of them. Hope this helps.

I got a good deal on LP-2 rolls, I have a dozen rolls coming my way. It should be fun searching through them. I'll be sure to post any finds here. Twelve rolls should keep me busy for a while! It might have been easier/cheaper to just buy a few of the LP-2 errors, where is the fun and sense of adventure in that? Any duplicates may be offered to trade here, but as I said, I'm a collector, not a reseller.
