Does it weigh that when it is centered on the scale?

Also, turn ceiling fans off near the scale because the air movement will affect readings. It's not way above spec, but a little high for tolerance, I think.

Spruett001 said it all, my first thought, its hanging off, of course it'll read funky. Besides, what else would it mean? Nada ting! No one has cared for 75 years, why should they now? And I don't mean that in a rough way, thingabouddit! It...does...not....matter. Hasn't, and won't. Tolerances within production and effects from age.

2.7g is normal. But extra plating would make it weight more:

Steel cents had two weight standards withthe one later n the year being 2.75 grams (The 2.7 grams figure you usually see is actually an average of the light and heavy standards) so 2.75 plus the legal tolerance of .13 grams can bring you up to 2.88. So if your coin is out of tolerance it is only by .01 grams or so. That might be accounted for by additional weight from dirt or corrosion products, zinc or iron oxide.
