Hello, I'm to the the forum an fairly new to collecting also. Just started learning about the errors out there so I sat down with a stack of Kennedy's to take a closer look an this one stuck out.

Please help me. Is this a double die error? It appears to only be on the words "half dollar" on the back of coin. I review other 1973's an I don't see this. Is this a known error? I can't find anything online about this. Thanks for your help

The devices are reduced in thickness, not doubled. Looks like Machine Doubling (MD) to me.

Does " Machine Doubling" mean it's not an error? Adds no value?

Not an error, more of a defect. Sorry, but there may not be any added value.

I agree with Fuzzy. What you have is known as MD. It can stand for any combination of machine/mechanical doubling/damage.

The die shifted during the strike and created that lower "plateau" next to the devices. Unfortunately, this is all considered a non-error, or damage, and has no added value.

It may be worth keeping as a comparison for the future.

Good eyes to spot that even if it has no extra value.

Keep searching. We have folks report neat finds here almost every day.

Welcome!! I am also fairly new and the one thing I have gotten down pat is the Machine Doubling now. LOL! Its tricky sometimes, but if the "doubled" portion looks flat like a shelf, it is Machine Doubling. That helped me in figuring it out. Good luck in your searches and Happy Hunting!
