As some of you know, one of my (too) many pursuits is to collect the awesome coinage of the Hunnic tribes who ruled or terrorized most of central Asia from about 300-700 AD. These aren't cheap or easy coins to find, so I was thrilled to spot a CNG lot auction with three drachms of Kidara, the founder of the short-lived Kidarite hun kingdom that subjugated and replaced the Kushano-Sassanian kingdom in Afghanistan/Pakistan. The lot described "Three AR drachms of Kidara, one with features engraved..."

Cool, maybe that's ancient graffiti?

Yea, it is relatively modern modification, they were just trying to make a better likeness for historical purposes, right? Lol!

For reference, here is what the portrait was supposed to originally look like:

In addition to striking problems with Kidara's face, it was also the first spot to wear flat.

Some imbecile thought that they could put the face back on.

Looks like a caricature you'd have done at a carnival.

Huge bummer.

That's ashamed a otherwise nice and valuable coin reduced to being worth next to nothing, and not to mention ruining it's historical value.
