Can graded Mint State coins have fingerprints?

Yes, the only thing that can drop a coin out of Mint State is wear, which is to say, the rubbing off of details. A distracting fingerprint might drop it down a few grades within the Mint State range, but it wouldn't make it circulated.

Do you mean already slabbed coins or could a coin with fingerprints be graded MS?

Quote: Do you mean already slabbed coins or could a coin with fingerprints be graded MS? Good point. Maybe both or all three. 1) Already slabbed coins? 2) Could a coin with fingerprints be graded MS? 3) Plus, I suppose a fingerprint (undetected at first) could grow on a coin already slabbed.

many high grade mint state and special strike coins come with finger prints..not all finger prints can detract from a coins appeal and some finger prints even appear neutrally or add to eye appeal when it comes to the toning patterns that develop on the coin. every finger print is different in how it displays on a coin but as far as technical grading is concerned, it is of no significance unless it develops a deep discoloration or corrosion which we mostly see on coppers. a mint state coin can have many 'issues' and still be technically uncirculated..as long as the coin does not have any circulation wear or friction on the high points it is uncirculated regardless of finger prints.

Mint state in terms of wear? Yes. Mint state in terms of staining? No.

A slabbed coin that has a straight grade AND a finger print! I strongly suspect that the fingerprint hadn't appeared when it was slabbed. That occurred later. IMO it is now a DETAILS coin. The acidic skin oils have probably already etched the coin's surface.

A little off subject , but I'd rather have a MS coin with a finger print than one with a big scratch or rim bump .

Well, I guess it's personal preference. Like most of you have already mentioned, rubbing off of details, deep discoloration or corrosion, Mint state in terms of staining?, I strongly suspect that the fingerprint hadn't appeared when it was slabbed, the acidic skin oils have probably already etched the coin's surface or but I'd rather have a MS coin with a finger print than one with a big scratch or rim bump . Are all right on the money! The toning, corrosion discoloration on this coin diffidently looks etched/baked into the surface of the coin! Just curious. In your opinion, if this coin was submitted today would it come back 64?
