I have this slabbed 1817 large cent.

Her smile is extra long and the nose has several sheared marks. Do you think these are done intentionally? Accidental?

How do you think NGC handled this coin, grade wise. Straight or details? If details, what description?

Let me know what you think

That smile looks very painful. I am awful at grading early copper, but I will guess F Dets, damaged.

The coin displays nice VF30 details, but the various marks and hits on the obverse do distract. I would net at VG10 maybe F12.

F details, damaged or tooled. Even if you gave it to me for free I could never put it in my album as it would scare the rest of my coins something fierce.

At some point within the last couple of hundred years, someone with some extra time on their hands had a bit of fun with Ms Liberty... Agree with Details, Tooled.

I know it's not purdy but it's special Liberty.

I do agree that someone modify this intentionally.

Will reveal NCG label tomorrow ~~

A straight grade!

Any thoughts on why?
(other than cracking jokes about the grader or TPG)

What?! There's no way that could possibly straight grade! At the very least, VF Details, damaged.

They probably get inexperienced kids to grade after being given some basic training. How else can these TPG process so many coins. Just my opinion.

Just another reason why I don't slab my prize coins . They are only good for authenticity . But what if they screw up on that too ? We hear all the time how the Chinese are perfecting their counterfeits .
