What is going on with this nickel? I almost spent it just now at Chick-fil-A. The pattern is raised on both sides. Never seen anything like this before. Thoughts? Edited by Dilworth 02/19/2018 10:44 pm

I'm no expert but just looks like a well worn nickel.

If the coin is slightly heavier, I would think glue or clear nail polish was added to the coin. Circulation managed to chip it away a bit. The place to check would be on the rim on the right side of the building. PSD

I hate to say it, But clearer pics would help. I do see something I just can't make it out with the current pics.

I uploaded some better pics. It's definitely not something on the coin. It's stamped in and raised. It almost looks like a massive die crack?

Notice the 'STA' on STATES, You can see that there is a clear layer distorting these devices. (we are talking about the reverse, correct) There is no way that this could be a die crack. Something is on the surface of this coin.

Put it in some acetone and see if that comes off.

Acetone does nothing and I scratched it a little with a sharp object but won't go any further than that. I'm 100% sure there is nothing on this coin! Showed it to a coworker and he thinks that something was wrong with the plancet before it went into the die.

Post Mint Damage ( PMD). Your co-worker is incorrect. It's something on the surface of the coin. If you don't believe that, show it to a coin dealer.

It appears like something on the obverse above Jefferson's head too. Similar to what happened on the reverse.

Note how the devices and the fields are affected? This in not a die issue. If the fields were affected the building and the devices (Letters) would not have been affected. The building is sunk into the die. The outside part of the die is the fields. The devices are also sunk into the die. So nothing could disturb all three areas of the die without wiping the die clean away. It is something on the coin.

I'm not sure. if you click on the top image and view the larger version you can see some disruption on the left side of Monticello. Then what sticks out most to me is the S in states it's clearly split.I'm going with a faulty planchet or something I'm not aware of yet. Try getting a pic very close and very clear of this S, Also try some angle pics to show if the anomaly is raised above the field.

You probably can't feel the devices, as they are covered over. So that area on the coin would feel smooth to the touch.

There is nothing on this coin post mint. There was something wrong with the plancet prior to going into the die.
