Picked these up a month ago at the Central States Numismatic Society Convention in Rosemount, IL. My 21st birthday was a few days before the show and my parents paid for a nice chunk of the 1881 as a present and I picked up the 1871 as a gift to me. Both are keys to the Shield nickel series.

Any comments appreciated.

I spotted this RPD without a loupe. I must have loupes for eyes. It's a FS-0006.5.

LOL, I was there for six hours- I shopped until I dropped
That was the largest show I had ever attended and the eye candy was overwhelming. I filled several holes in my type album(Classic Head 1/2c, Capped Bust quarter, etc), stocked up on a few 1909 and VDB Lincolns and I picked up a few nice pieces of exonumia.

That 1881 of yours is a good get, that coin is seriously tough. That is the advantage of a big show like CSNS, FUN, or ANA- you can usually find all of the scarce and rare goodies, not just the six figure kind but the three figure kind as well.

Amazon, how common is the RPD? I haven't studied the 1871 date at all, but I do know it is a key date. I would love to get one, one day, that's a decent strike. I don't recall seeing one yet that is fully struck. I do like yours though...great pick up!

Sounds like you picked up some nice coins. I was like that at my first big show too. This was my 2nd biggest(actually this one was the biggest in size) and I came in with a game plan to buy some key Shield nickels. Even with a large show, I found few nickels, but I think I did alright.

They're not that common. Fletcher's "The Shield Five Cent Series" only lists 3 varieties and Howard Spindel's SNV lists an additional 2 bring the total to five different varieties. Mine is estimated to have between 5-8 known examples but that number's probably higher. Either way, I think I was lucky to be able to cherrypick this one.
