Hi, I'm a big fan of the older large pennies. I have limited experience on grading these coins, but based on what I can see it's a better grade. From seeing the reverse photo, I'm curious--was the coin varnished at some point?

Hi Mairo
No mention of the wide date variety but 15th Edition of Maccas values for 1913 1d.
VG $1.50 F $10 VF $45 EF $155

Wide date variety is describes as very scarce. I would describe the coin as Fine tho the gunk that appears on the coin concerns me.
Tot the right buyer (and gunk free) probably around the $50.00 mark

I think the Pre-decimal varieties book will have it but I dont have it, but as I was told by a friend of mine that the coin has very low mintage. As for the varnished I am not sure since the coin doesn't appear varnished when I hold it in my hand

Wide date? What's the best way to distinguish this variety?

Ohh..."wide" pertains to the thickness of the figures, and not the distance between digits? Now I get it...

This penny is a bit more worn, but would this be the "normal" or "wide date"?

I've got a Pre-Decimal Coin Varieties book & all it says for the 1913 wide date is that it's very scarce, as mentioned above by Bigfella. The book doesn't give values, it's just a catalogue of all the varieties known to the author in (I guess at the time of compilation) 2005. Renniks catalogue for 2007 shows a value of $10 for Fine, which is the same as the regular 1913 1d. If I had one of these coins, I'd be inclined to give it a value of at least 50% above the normal one, so in my opinion, $15.00. So, Mairo & KurtS, well done you lucky ducks!
