I got a weird coin from Costa Rica, 1969 10 Centimos. The weird thing is that it looks and feels and sounds like its silver. It appears to be 2 g, the correct weight for both silver and copper-nickel versions of the 10 Centimos. The 1969 10 Centimos is supposed to be copper-nickel.

As you can see in the photos, the coin on the left has a silvery color and evidence of an earlier mounting. Would someone silver plate it for jewelry?

If I do happen to get a Costa Rica expert, I also happened to find a 1985 20 Colones with no reeding that appears to be thicker than other coins of the same year.

I'm no Costa Rica expert, but here hare my non-expert opinions.

I'd say the 1969 has been silver-plated, for use as jewellery.

As for the 1985, it may have been "rimmed" in a slot machine? These coins are stainless steel, not the easiest metal to "spoon the edge".

After the whole 1972 Quarter discussion I am hoping for the big score! Whatever happened with that quarter? Did he sell it? Maybe at the Littleton yard sale!

I kind of assumed that the 1969 piece was plated, but it seems weird to plate a silver colored coin. As for the lack of edge reeding, I was guessing it was a casino coin at first, but it is thicker than a regular coin and just doesn't have the same look (I've got a JFK half that is a clear casino coin). Maybe because it is stainless steel, a metal I'm not familiar with, it wears in a way I'm not used to.
