EF has nothing to do with MS. MS is strictly uncirculated which is above EF. I don't think that is EF either, I'd say VF at best.

I'm going to say F-15 due to details and wear present on the obverse.

I'd go with F-12. I'm afraid it's not even close to EF (or EF-40, if you will).

Thats a cleaned Fine. Coins are graded on a scale of 1-70, (sheldon scale) This coin is a 12 maybe a 15 on a good day. MS coins start at 60. I hope you did not pay XF prices for this coin. It is worth about 30-35 bucks.

Definitely cleaned Jeff. I would have to say VG10 cleaned. I have an 1857 graded XF40 by PCGS. I don't think there is enough detail to call F12. That's just my opinion. I can post a pic of my coin if you would like to see what PCGS calls a 40.

I'd still say it's better than F-12. A little. VF TOPS but probably not there

Eh you got slightly burned but not by more than 10-15 bucks tops, so not that bad. Seriously though, go out and get that ANA standards grading book, will save you money in the long term.

If you have a Blue Book or Red Book already.....in there it describes well enough what grades you can attain.... For instance here's what the Blue Book says specifically for the Flying Eagle Cent..( RedBook will say the same thing)... G-4....(good)..all details worn, but readable..... (most likely THIS is the grade of your coin)VG-8...(very good)...details in Eagle's feathers and eye evident, but worn........ this would be the best grade you could hope for with this Flying Eagle....but I really doubt it'd grade this....it's a G-4 in my opinion.... F-12...(fine)....Eagle head details and feather tips sharp VF-20..(very fine)...Considerable detail visable in feathers in right wing and tail EF-45..(extrememly fine)....Slight wear, all details sharp AU-50..(about uncirculated).... Slight wear on Eagles's left wing and breast MS-60..(uncirculated).....No trace of wear. Light blemishes MS-63........ PF-63........ I say G-4 because the breast is worn smooth, the tail feathers are worn smooth, the left and right feather tips are very poor detail or smooth, no head details at all, the eye is very worn, there is just very little "feather detail" at all left in this coin........nothing here lends itself to an upgrade from a G-4....the very lowest grading in my opinion... .... of course the reverse is much better, but they typically are on the Flying Eagles, and the "grade" isn't focused on the reverse anyway. So, also, you can see that "MS" rating you referred to starts at "uncirculated condition" which this Flying Eagle certainly isn't. And technically, as described in the book, The terms "mint State" and "uncirculated" are used interchangeably to describe coins showing not trace of wear.....they can vary to a degree supporting grades such as MS-70, MS-65, MS-63, and MS-60. Toning, contact marks, or luster will attribute these different "MS" grades.

Although I hate to disagree with eaglefoot's spirited and detailed defense of the grade of 'Good' for your coin, an examination of coins in holders point to yours being a solid VG grade. It looks like a cleaned metal detector find, but with the details, rims, and lettering, it far exceeds the G-4 requirements. Now, it's not worth much more than the price for a 'Good' graded coin, so at $45 you probably overpaid by $15-20.

I vote VG8 as well. I am far from an expert though. If it is cleaned then it would be worthless than a VG8 normal though.
