I apologise in advance if I've put this post in the wrong forum but it seemed to me to be the most appropriate. I have few sets of 1981 Proof coins and apparently there is a very big difference between those which are of Type 1 versus Type 2. I read more about how to tell one Type from the other on the article in the URL below, but I'm still not sure what I have.

http://www.ngccoin.com/news/viewart...ArticleID=29

Quote from above article:
"The differences in the 1981 types are often what dealers and collectors have trouble identifying. The difference lies in the style of the mint mark punch. The Type 1 is the same punch used to make the Type 2 1979 coinage. The Type 1 has a pointed top when compared to a flat top of the 1981. The Type 2 has bulbous serifs in comparison to the Type 1 and the serifs do not touch the inside of the S. It is these small differences that give the coin so much more value, $325 for the set versus $11."

Type example (from above article - I think this is a Type 2 based on the file name but the article isn't clear on which picture is which Type):

My coins:
1981-US-Proof-Set---Type-1-Or-Type-2?

1981-US-Proof-Set---Type-1-Or-Type-2?

Any thoughts are very appreciated.

In the first NGC link, the top picture of the mint mark is the Type 1 and the bottom picture is Type 2. One thing to note is that a proof set can be a mixture of Type 1 and 2 mint marks so check all of the the coins but the cent and dollar are the money coins.

Here is a link to a SBA website that give an explanation and a good set of pics for the Type 1 and 2 mint marks http://www.smalldollars.com/dollar/page29.html
