What would everyone grade this coin. Pictures aren't very good but these pics were sent to me. Than Image: 1909sVdbVgB.jpg51.52 KBks

I was thinking AG to Good. He's got it graded as VG.

So I take it this isn't a coin you own? First off, I'd ask for larger photos of the date and mintmark. Perhaps I'm overly cautious and this is attributable to wear, but I'm unsure about the shape of the mintmark. Here's a blowup of the coin in question, where I've pointed to the bottom serif which should be squared off--wear? (compare to last diagnostic). Another good diagnostic tool: the four mm positions of the 09-S VDB: Not to cast needless doubt--but since this is a scarce and expensive coin I submit this for consideration.

Good points Kurt S. Also No this is not my coin, just a coin I inquired about from a dealer that had it on his website.

ALWAYS be a sceptic on any key Lincoln. There's tons of fakes, Kurt (as usual) offers good advice.
The wear of the S seems to be inconsistent with the grade....which is AT BEST a G4. I'd expect that S to be a bit more worn.
NO WAY IN HE|| I'D BUY A KEY DATE COIN FROM PICS LIKE THAT. In fact, no way I'd buy a serious key date without seeing it in-hand. It's just not worth the risk IMO.
EDIT: The VDB doesn't even look quite right, it should have more slant...but it could be the crappy pic too.

As far as grade goes I'd call it an AG as the date isn't bold. It could be a G, but I seriously doubt it.
As goes to it being genuine... I'm really tempted to say it's not... It's definatly not a #1 as the mark is set too high. It could be a #2, but for me it looks like the mintmark is set to the right too much for me. It could be a #3 but the mark is set too high for me to feel comfortable about calling it that either... and although it's set in the right spot for #4 the mint mark on the coin is tilted... Draw your own conclusions, but if he's asking VG prices then you need to walk away or tell him you'll pay for the certification if it comes back authentic and purchase the coin at whatever the grade is that it comes back as being.

"I'd expect that S to be a bit more worn." BadThad--very good point! I noticed that too...I don't like the difference in contrast either. My opinion is that mm is more consistent with a 1917-41 Lincoln (but it's a small pic). "The VDB doesn't even look quite right, it should have more slant." At the risk of "splitting pixels" here, I did a resample and see what you mean--the mid-stroke should follow the bottom stroke. But why wouldn't somebody just add an "S" to a 1909-VDB? Still, this coin reminds me of a favorite movie line: "When ever there is any doubt, there is no doubt"

The scratches on the reverse are probably where they scratched off "COPY"
