What would you grade this 1928 S Cent? What would you value it at? The wheat ears look better than the pictures suggest. Thanks

This year/mint is known for some mushiness and you can see it on this coin. There is some definate wear on the left wheathead and both grains. I also see it starting on the hair above the ear and the top of the ear. It's close to EF, but just a bit too much wear IMO.

Ergh! this picture is bugging me. In real life, ALL of the wheat lines are sharp. Let me try to get a better picture... Plus I also have a fairly well struck 1929 D to post.

This coin still shows some original red leading me to think its an AU although weakly struck. The marks on cheek and forehead would lower net grade to EF.

It also has the large S mint mark that's the rarer type so maybe $15.00 EF-45+RB all 1928-S have a weak obverse & a strong reverse strike its not a VF

The coin looks like it still has some mint bloom. I'm no Lincoln expert but I could understand if it's weakly struck and deserving of an XF grade. Although, the marks on Lincoln's face bug me a bit.

Left wheat looks much better in close-up, EF40-45, maybe AU in person.
Zach, you need more/better/stronger lighting....that's what is causing you to lose detail.

I would personally say VF-EF on the pictures and how you describe it. The only reason is the face, there are four scratches along the brow and cheek and there is not a lot of detail from the hairline to the neck and inner ear to the eye.

This is a tought one for me to grade as whenever I see luster remaining on an older lincoln I want to ignore certain things...
On first blush I might have called this an AU, but after being honest with myself I just can't as the wear in the hair and wheat kernels is just too much for me.
The details are there though, so I have no problem with saying this is an outstanding XF.

This dialog is a good example of what I have been going through with upgrading my #1 Lincoln set. I have tried to use what Thad and Biokemist have used in their experience with die wear vs. coin wear; but, in the end, I seem to always go with the eye appeal. I suppose that, in the end, no one would care but me! Although I have diligently tried to achieve a uniform numerical grade for every two decades in the wheat series; what I actually have done is gone with coins that look right to me with high appeal. Please pay no attention as I sit here and mumble to myself......
