This coin has been through the ringer literally.

Its indented, looks like its been either polished or shellacked also nice shine to the surface- the letters are flat and spread out like a pancake.

There is no doubt at all on this one- THE MINT MADE THIS!!

Seriously- what caused this?

Hi,

This is gonna sound like a cop out answer as it was the answer in a prior thread but....This is what a " Dryer Coin" looks like when the coin is a plated cent minted in 1982 or later. Note the rim starting to curve inward and notice the flattening of details on the reverse. The copper plating was worn away by the abrasion caused most likely by other coins in the fin of the dryer that this one was stuck with.

In most laundromats, these coins, keys and other objects are removed about once a month or so. If you've ever used a laundromat with coins stuck in the fins of the dryer chamber, you would actually here them clanging around.

Have Fun,
Bill

Bill, has the dryer scenario ever been verified? One problem I've always had with this hypothesis is that the coins never show dings or percussion marks. The surface is usually smooth. There's no doubt that they are damaged, though.

Hi Mike,

You saw my response in another thread. I can personally vouch for the dryer scenario. I have coins that came to me from a laundromat in Myerstown, PA. There was a time when I had to use the establishment. I heard the coins clanging around and asked the owner about them. He handed me several that had recently been removed from the fins.

I have several cents in various stages of destruction. I have a five-cent coin, a few dimes and a quarter as well. It may take me some time to find them but I can take some pictures of them for you and post them here or email them to you. It may help for you to see what they look like.

Thanks,
Bill
