*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***It looks like it is in pretty good condition to my untrained eye. Thoughts? How do you grade coins on your own without sending them in? I know it's nothing too special but I just wondered how people mark the white cardboard on their coins with grades. Thanks!

Great to find CRHing! Sad tho, no way has this been floating around in circulation. It came from a stoopid relative just bank dumping an inherited collection, or was stolen and unloaded. That's a VF/XF, full diamonds and Liberty, excellent find.

I would argue that learning how to properly grade coins is one of the first skills that numismatists should learn. One way is to look at graded coins and compare the remaining details. Of course there are books with pictures of coins in the various grades as well if you prefer to read paper rather than a computer screen. I could give you a smarmy answer to your second question (with a pen), but clearly I don't exactly understand your question.

That's an incredible find! In excellent condition! In terms of grading, you may want to learn the same way many of us first did: buy a copy of the Red Book (aka "A Guide Book of United States coins") by R. S. Yeoman. It gives basic guidelines for grading all United States coins.

Agree with Spence on learning to grade. Start hanging out in the grading sections. Though we are somewhat handicapped b/c we are grading from photos, the consensus is usually very accurate. Also PCGS offers a grading guide for each series. https://www.PCGS.com/photograde/

Wow, that's an excellent roll find! I agree that it probably came from someone else's collection, unfortunately. It has found a good home, though! As far as writing grades on 2x2s, I don't do it.

Thanks for all the feedback folks. We are quite new to this so I am probably asking an annoying question. Thanks for giving me helpful answers!

Ask away, that's the sole function of theis forum, for collector LEARNING. Be prepared to read an awful lot and bang your head many times! May I suggest a very easy read?

Also (another newbie question) how do I find out what it is worth? I saw one online for hundreds of dollars that was not nearly as nice as this one. You could barely see the letters. It was professionally graded though. And it said "One in the neck" what the heck does that mean? Is it worth sending this in to be graded? I thought it might be worth $20 or $30, but some others are way higher and not nearly as nice. Maybe they are error versions? Thanks again guys!

Quote: Is it worth sending this in to be graded? I really don't think so. The pics aren't clear enough to tell if it has been cleaned in the past. That would affect the grade in a very detrimental way if you submitted it. As it is, I believe your estimate is about right ($20-$30 if kosher). It would have to be valued over $100 to get graded, as a consensus rule for getting coins graded.

Quote: Is it worth sending this in to be graded? I think not. Probably AU at best; catalogs about $20. And if it's been cleaned (I think it has) then even less. But oddly enough it is the ONLY IHC I'm missing. Eventually I'll get one; probably MS-65.
