I just acquired these two Tancred Crusader coins and I'm putting the pieces together on them.

As some of you know, I'm a middle school history teacher and I like to own a little piece of the history that I teach.

Not my area of collecting, but I love the history of Crusades. BTW this is a
Great Podcast about every Crusade there ever was!

This is an Excellent Referance about the coins of the crusades (I'll post it in the books, downloads as well) and it gives the history as well. Excellent!

Anyway Coin 1: Tancred AE Follis, Overstruck on 2nd Tancred, 22mm, 3.96g
My-New-Tancred-Crusader-Coins

This looks like an overstruck coin, but what are remnants of the first strike? I didn't know?

After some research, this is what I came up with.
This was a later coin struck from a type 3 shown below.
My-New-Tancred-Crusader-Coins

Obv.: Bust of St Peter facing.
Rev.: KEBOI QHTODV LOCOVT ANKPI in four lines.

Coin 2: . Tancred AE Follis, Cross and legend, 20mm, 3.34g
This one doesn't look to be an overstruck coin but the reverse is a bit difficult.
My-New-Tancred-Crusader-Coins

It's coming down to these two reverse:
Tancred, Prince of Galilee, Regent - 1100-1103; 1105-1112

Obv.: Facing bust of Tancred, holding sword.

Rev.: IC XC NI KA around cross. OR Rev.: Cross pommee with IC XC NI KA in angles.

Any thoughts or more information about the coins would be great.

Neat coins...we certainly don't see coins of Tancred very often! Good detective work on the overstrike. Congrats. I've provided links to the .pdf in several posts before, but never in the Books/Downloads section - so thanks in advance for adding it.

Very interesting coins. The first one looks like it might have been overstruck on a early Byzantine coin of Phocas.

I am very interested in Crusader coinage, but haven't taken the plunge yet, too many other coins in the fire. Thanks for posting them.

Didn't know too much about overstruck coins till I bought this. I'm surprised that they struck them with a lot of the prior coin still there. I would have thought they had to be almost bare.

Spence I'll look into that thread when I get a chance.
