robertshaftoe New Member United States 4 Posts	Posted 02/25/2018 02:13 am The section of the face to the left of the eye is missing and I can't see any tooling marks. It doesn't appear to be a weak strike either, due to the depth and sharpness of the other parts of the face and letters. Has anyone seen this before? Report this Post to the Staff

dave700x Rest in Peace United States 10625 Posts	Posted 02/25/2018 08:29 am Definitely an over-polished die most likely to remove the damage from a die clash event. My theory is the San Francisco mint had planchet feed issues in the late 30's early 40's and as a result there are many Mercury dimes struck from over-polished dies. The missing area in front of the eye is referred to as a broken nose by some collectors. to the forum! Report this Post to the Staff
