As explained previously, numerous times, the blanks are cut from zinc plate stock, then electroplated with copper. This is different than a cladding like on dimes and other clad coins(edge shows). The copper plating solution will gain zinc from the blanks, more zinc in there makes brass, that gold tone. Just a quality control failure to replace/condition the plating solution.
