This is the nicest penny I have, it is really brilliant, except for the black patch on the rim and spot on reverse. I've read on here about Verdi-care (sp?) should I use it?

I'm curious how much the larger rim darkening affects the grade. Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't. Just give it an acetone bath and gentle use a soaked Qtip on it. I'm not a grader, others will chime in. It's a nice coin though!

That's heavy cupric oxide or a carbon spot. It cannot be removed without damaging the coin. VC wouldn't touch it and these are cheap enough in high grade, it wouldn't be worth the effort IMO.

Quite honestly, I'd just buy a certified one and not bother with cleaning this one.

Thanks y'all, I'm not really a penny collector, bought this one at a pawn shop because it caught my eye. I just don't want it to deteriorate further. appreciate the comments and suggestions!

If you don't want it to deteriorate any further , then go ahead and give it a few dips in Acetone then Verdi-Care . As said above this will not remove any of those carbon spots but will preserve the coin from further damage . Don't for get to holder that coin when done .

Don't disagree, but the coin simply isn't worth the effort.

I wouldn't put any effort into attempting to conserve the coin. It's just not worth enough to put any effort into.

To all Members ; This new newbie: (jstav ) is excited about the nicest penny Cent he has . All he wants to do is to keep it the way he has it . He's asking us how to keep it from getting any worse ,not for us to tell him to buy a better one . So how about helping this newbie out , I'm sure he realizes that he can buy a nicer one when ever he wants .

Indeed....the best thing for him to do is put it into a 2x2 or a coin tube as it is.
