Hello all! While preparing an ebay listing this afternoon, I noticed what appears to be an error on a 1909-S LWC that was slabbed by NGC and not notated-there is no 'L' in Liberty, and it's pretty obvious. Has anyone else encountered one of these?

It looks like the date area was polished down on the fields reducing the date a bit and the lapel area on the jacket. But the missing 'L' is probably because of a filled die issue. But it does happen from time to time. Here is one that had some grease that block out some of the LIBERTY:

Thank you both for your prompt responses! The slab indicates that it was 'improperly cleaned' at some point in time. It may have been my father, but it was more likely the fellow who sold it to him. That may account for the anomalies to the surface and features that you noted. The reverse has what looks to be vertical cleaning marks on it as well. Can't thank you enough for your assistance! It will be up on ebay tonight for any who may be interested.

@cwb, if has was improperly cleaned it was by my Grandfather. He passed in 1984 and was in a plastic tube that holds fifty Lincoln cents until late last year.

There is no way of knowing exactly when a coin was cleaned, but it is obvious to collectors that some coins have been cleaned. Many people don't realize that it isn't good to clean coins, some people think they have improved the coins condition somehow by damaging it even more. It is common to see people do it.

An error is not listed by the TPG unless they list it as a variety and you pay extra for that indication. Minor errors are almost never listed by TPG.

That is absolutely true. The only thing I have used on a coin is acetone. Coop told me he uses mineral oil but I have yet to try that out yet. I appreciate all of you for helping me with information on this great hobby of error collection.
