All, As a newbie to this world, I have been experimenting with searching various currency. I just went through $5,000 In $100 bills and noticed that a number of them had stamps, why do people do that? Is it because "they the stamper" want to mark the bill to so they determine if they are searching the same bills they have searched before? In the picture below there are 3 but these represented about 50% of the bills. Your thoughts are appreciated. Topekaguy Edited by Topekaguy 02/27/2018 1:23 pm

I think it's important that we remember that money is made for commerce and not collectors. Almost anything over and often including a $20.00 bill usually gets checked for it being counterfeit with those magic markers that the cashiers have. I would be interested in what those various stamps are for though that you show.

It's the modern day version of a chop mark, certifying that the cashier checked the security features. I saw probably hundreds of little stamps like these, many of which were Chinese characters. We were required to mark *all* bills over $20 with a magic pen; same concept.

And the pen doesn't work on most counterfeits now.

It's a terrible practice, Topekaguy, and I think it should stop! Not just the $100's, people seem to feel free to put all kinds of marks, numbers, names, what-have-you on paper money. It is defacement, in my book. Govt won't be cracking down anytime soon, I'm sure. Maybe, the managers in stores can explain to the cashiers not to do this.
BTW, I was under the impression that those marks for checking the authenticity of the paper would disappear after drying.

Teller stamps can mean different things, I'll bet. Doesn't really bother me.

Since I don't collect modern bills, it doesn't bother me. I see bills with marks, stamps, and writing on them all the time.

Quote: disappear after drying Nope, at least not in the same day. We never started the day with anything larger than a $20, and I very rarely received bills with the yellow mark; usually $5 or $10 if anything. Any bills I marked at 9 AM were still yellow at 5 PM. It's management driving the decision, at any rate. I once didn't have the heart to mark an older (1970s?) $100 and got a royal chewing out from my manager for it. Thankfully, 99.9% of "good" notes are saved before they see circulation, or soon after distribution. Most bills aren't worth saving, so the marks really don't bother me. I'd wince every time I marked a star note, but I also didn't want to tie up $100 to buy it. In a way, I like the stamps, scribbles, and notes. Paper money is so ephemeral (2-5 year life expectancy) so seeing a bill with a history is nice.
