I voted "Princess."
It's probably not the best economic choice (investment), but I'd get the "valuable because it's rare" $3 gold instead of the "valuable because it's popular" 09-Svdb.
There were about the same number of 09-Svdb cents minted as all dates and mint marks of $3 gold pieces combined.

Quote: There is no 22 P. The 22 no d which is a 22 d with a very worn die.
-SFWUSC Thanks SFWUSC. I am aware of this. I put P to stand for Plain, as it is labeled 1922 Plain in my Dansco....but I will clarify from now on to avoid confusion. As for purchasing both, I have thought about this. I am sure that I could, but each of the coins would suffer in quality in order to fit both in my budget. I am happy with a lower grade 09-s vdb, but would prefer a higher grade princess....at least EF or so.

thanks Amazon. Yes, I really would like to get a nice $3 gold, especially since I purchased a fake and agree with you on all you have said. It is a very tough choice for me as I am also actively a lincoln collector and really only need the vdb to fill the hole in my set. The three dollar gold I want for basically all the reasons that you said. The main thing the Lincoln has going for it is the consistant high demand, and the fact that once I get it, I will have a complete wheatback set. Here is the $3 gold that I may go for, because I believe it is the best bang for buck given no one bids on it. The seller posted this up several weeks ago, and nobody bid; so if I elect the $3 route, this will probably be the one. http://cgi.ebay.com/1878-3-INDIAN-G...in_W0QQitemZ180251238593QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item 180251238593&_trkparms=72:552%7C39:1%7C65:12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

If you do get one, go for a rarer date. Might take awhile to find one, but too many on there are 1854 or 1878.

I voted for the 1909 SVDB, reasoning as follows. It's likely that whichever one you choose, in the months or years ahead you'll have the means to buy the other one. Given the popularity of Lincolns and the expected increase in demand, the SVDB is probably going to appreciate in price much more than the $3 gold pieces. So if you buy the King now and the Princess later, you'll probably end up spending less altogether than if you bought the Princess now and the King later.

Pass! Heritage has about 80 of them for sale, have you looked over there?

Those pictures are kinda hard to see. Did you ask the seller for better pictures? I agree with hadley dog, look at heritage. I looked quickly at their auction archieves and they've sold a bunch recently for under $1600. In fact, they even sold some problem free ones for $800. You might be able to buy both if your willing to sacrifice them for lower grades that way. Problem solved.

Even though I'm a huge fan of gold, I voted for the 09SVDB...since it will complete your set, that is huge IMHO. So I say get that one first And with the gold market as volatile as it has been recently, you might get lucky and find a nice Princess when the spot price is low and get yourself a good deal on that one too Good luck with the purchase, whichever way you end up going!

Well folks, the 09-s vdb won out. It was a tough call, but I weighed the pros and cons(some of which you guys pointed out), and went with the vdb. I was way under budget, though it wasn't any kind of great deal. Here are the pros: -A higher grade vdb is generally less expensive than an equivalent common $3 gold at this time(they are very close though). -Once the 2009 cent comes out, it is possible(definitely not a sure thing) that key Lincoln coins will be much more expensive.(I wish I had bought this coin years ago, don't we all). -I now will have a complete set(minus the errors 55ddo and 22plain). The seller has perfect feedback and a great return policy(no restocking fees). I had considered buying both, but would rather wait and buy higher end pieces of each when I can afford it. If I was to buy both, I would probably be pushing my budget. I had considered heritage as I am a member, but I just use it as a resource. I read that you need to establish multiple dealer references to bid, and I live kind of out in the middle of nowhere. I'm already established on ebay. I will post high end photos and more descriptors when I receive the coin, so we can analyze whether or not I should keep it. I dont want to bias you guys with pics without seeing the coin in hand first...:-P thanks for all of your inputs! John
