What is a good resource to acquire national currency notes for a small town (specifically Iowa)?
I found a note from my home town and while extremely interested, I am not paying double what it is worth just to have it.
Ideas?

Are you looking for information on Iowa notes or where you can buy them?

This is the book that I use to determine all of the bank notes that are known to exist from each bank in Iowa. The note you want may be expensive because your bank may not have many notes still in existence. The book is expensive but I found a copy of it at my local library. What town/city are you looking for if you don't mind me asking?
Here is the book title.
Iowa National Bank Notes Hardcover - 2006 by James & Sweeney, Steven Ehrhardt (Author)

I'm looking for notes from First National Bank of Boone. Found one on ebay, but it is grossly overpriced.

https://nationalcurrencyvalues.com/...cy/iowa.aspxBoone had two national banks, National Bank of Boone and First National Bank of Boone. The National Bank of Boone has only 1882 BB banknotes known. I'll need to acquire the book I mentioned to see how many are known. The First National Bank of Boone has 1882 BB, 1902 RS, 1902 BS and 1929 banknotes known. That number I am not sure at this time either. You may want to venture to coin shows in your area, you may have more success in finding a better price.

NoteCollector, you are correct that Boone did have two national banks, however, the National Bank of Boone and First National Bank of Boone are the same banks. They had a name change after the brown back era. For charter #3273 (National Bank of Boone and First National Bank of Boone) there are 28 large notes and 49 small notes known. There are only 3 brown back notes known, one $5 and 2 $10's. The Boone National Bank (Charter #6838) is the second bank to charter in Boone and only issued large size currency. Only 13 large notes known from there. Your best bet at acquiring a note will be from charter #3273. The note on ebay is overpriced and that seller always overprices their stuff. That same note sold on Heritage for $305 in May of 2017.

I was told $300 and less was a fair price. I made a few offers. He basically told me to hit the skids.
I called him out and he declined my last offer without counter. To heck with him.

Just be patient and one will eventually turn up for you. Visit a few coin shows and put the word out as to what you are looking for. Keep watching the online auctions. HA.com is a good resource for information on past sales and they also have monthly currency auctions.
I started looking for a note from McKinney Tx around 1965. A 1929 T-1 $5 finally turned up on a fixed price list from the late, great Curtis Iverson in 1972. I scrounged up the $19.50 for it 'cause I had to have it!
It is still in my collection!
Good luck!

Patience in your search. As was also suggested, put the word out to a few dealers. Their resources are typically far greater than yours in regards to networking with other dealers. I have been looking for my hometown at a price I am willing to pay for several years now. No rush. Enjoy the hunt!

I looked at the HA.com website and searched for Boone Ia in past sales. They have had sales for both banks over the years ...from red seals to small size 29's and everything in between. As expected, prices are all over the map.
You can set up a want list on their website and they can notify you when notes you are looking for come up for auction.

Thanks westernsky! I did also reach out to a shop in the next town over. Said he hadn't seen one in year, but he will contact me if he comes across one at shows, etc.

Good advice especially watching Heritage Auctions. In May 2017, a $10 Series 1902 Plain Back sold for $329. The next lot was the Series 1929 $20 now listed on ebay it brought $305.50 Another auction company you will want to check is Lyn Knight http://www.lynknight.com/ it's free to set up an account.
