An accident find. It seems attached to the rim. Nice chunk filling the device.

I run into these chunks/blobs of metal occasionally what are they and what are the cause? Most of the ones I find are on the date. Do you know if this type of error is from die damage or gunk?

I agree with john, they are not Cuds, they are Die Chips and can be found on any device.

That would be a Die Chip. A Cud is a Major Die Break that always involves the rim of the coin. Still a great find!

They are die chips and breaks as the others have said. The chips in the date often occur from a small post being broken from the die. Think of the die's surface as just the opposite from the coins struck by it. All of the devices are incuse, which leaves small pieces of metal, like posts, sticking outward from the die. An example would be the inside of a 8, which would have two small posts.

It's not a Cud, it's a die chip. Here are some examples of coins with a Cud and die chip.

I think Cuds were named after the Cud a cow chews, like a blob of gunk.
I suppose that could be like gum....
