Hello,

I recently bought an ebay item (as seen below) and was hit with a $10 Cash Advance Fee for the transaction from my credit card company.

I talked to my credit card company and they told me that it was not a mistake and that PayPal classified the transaction as a cash advance when they charged them for the transaction.

I contacted PayPal to try and figure out why this happened and I am still waiting for them to get back to me.

I have been buying and selling on ebay for over a decade and have never run into this issue before.

So, my question is has anyone here run into or heard of this issue before? Please let me know your thoughts on the matter. Thanks.

Wow....no!

I use PayPal a LOT and have never incurred a fee.
I hope they refund you.

The only way I could see this happening is if PayPal transferred money from your credit card account to your PayPal cash balance. They then withdrew the funds for the item you bought from that cash balance. Check how your payment preferences are set up.

Anyway, I would contact PayPal every hour on the hour until you get this resolved in your favor.

All PayPal had to do was charge his CC as a debit card and it would hit him with the cash advance fee

It must be a coincidence, because I just looked at my credit card statement, and a cash advance fee was listed for $10.00! I don't even use cash advance on this credit card! (I don't use ebay or PayPal on this credit card, either.)

OP and silverdaollar:

This is also what I would think had happened.

I just figured out what happened. It had nothing to do with PayPal...it was an error made by someone else that was paid using the credit card.

Ok, update,

So, I talked to both Discover Card and PayPal about this issue and got nowhere in regards to finding out why this happened. Discover Card assures me that PayPal billed the transaction to them as a cash advance transaction and PayPal assures me that they billed the transaction to Discover Card as a normal purchase transaction. So, one of them is lying but Discover Card was nice enough to give me a courtesy credit for all of the fees associated with this transaction. So, I am letting the issue go. Please let me know if you have any questions for me. Thanks for your comments.
