I bought this off ebay a few years back. It was a great price and not many bids, so I took a chance on it. It was sold to me as authentic, but I've got my suspicions about her.

Letters and date don't look right to me. Others will chime in. Only 109 thousand minted.
The CENT on reverse doesn't look right either.

There are 11 varieties of the 1796 flowing hair large cent (Sheldon 81-91). Unfortunately this coin does not match any of them. :(

One of the most obvious diagnostics is the closed loops in the bow in the reverse wreath. The large circular loops do not match any of the known varieties.

I agree - the numerals of the date, particularly the "9" and the "6", look kind of fishy. I like to compare images of a coin I am considering with pictures from the PCGS CoinFacts website. It's a very useful database with thousands of images of all kinds of U.S. coins.

I agree, the new PCGS CoinFacts website is very useful.
Don't forget to check out the old CoinFacts website too - it's still helpful for information such as varieties.

OMG! Horrible fake. Not even close. See if that ebay seller is still around just for giggles.

Another obvious problem is that on ALL of the 1796 Liberty cap reverses, both sides of the wreath terminated in a single leaf. On this the right branch ends in a double leaf.
