I'm thinking about buying this one - would like opinions before I commit.

This is a pleasing lightly corroded example. vf-details. Since it's raw I wouldn't pay more than $150 for it.
Edit: actually that looks like it might be in an NNC slab. If it's in a basement slab like NNC, then there is NO premium and should be purchased for the same prices as a raw coin.

I'm pretty sure it's raw. FMV for VG20 is $480. Would $240 be a fair price?
I do have a Whitman Large Cents album started. I have quite a few coins from 1826 and later, but only three from earlier.

That's quite a coincidence Numismatic Student! I actually bid on that coin and lost. It was part of that Sunday night dump of Carlyle Luer coins that didn't qualify for the signature auction. I purchased like 23 coins from that collection. I've already sold most of them. I couldn't believe those coins were selling so cheap. I suspect it's one of the reasons Heritage scrapped their Sunday night internet coin auctions.

I took a pass on it. In the meantime, I ordered books by Sheldon, Crosby and Bowers to educate myself about these coins before making any rash buying decisions. I appreciate everyone's input!

When purchasing a coin, especially Half Cents and large cents, make sure to check that the design matches a known variety. If it doesn't, it's most likely a counterfeit.

VF details, corrosion. overall the color is consistent and the surfaces appear to be original.

Okay, I did my homework on this one - it looks to be of the scarcest type of the three varieties in this year ( BW-2, S-268, B-2). Estimated population: 300 to 400. I guess that makes a difference in its monetary value. Also, that I should be looking for a BW-1, S-267, B-1 coin.
