
As mentioned they are from damage. How do we know? The edges of the areas are showing a raised area. This is from displacement of the metal after the strike. (kind of like pushed snow because it rises, or leave a wave on the coin) If this happened during the strike, the object that caused an issue (let say a piece of wire) would not leave a raised edge on each side of the struck through. Why? Because the die would keep the field level with the rest of the fields because that area is being shaped also.

If something altered the surface of the coin after the strike, we would see a wave
caused by the damage.
