This is being said, that Viola is the first women to be featured on a Canadian bank note other then the queen.

Then who are these women?

- I suppose I should have been clearer: I mean the 1st woman on the front of a CDN banknote (other than royalty). The figures on the backs of the 1935 notes are allegorical "not representative of any 1 person" and like images of nymphs/ferries - don't really count.

On the $100 - wouldn't know but I believe the rather androgynous figure annoyed some women's groups because it wasn't clear who she was (thus- she was allegorical much like the figures in the 1935 notes). More importantly, they were put off with the removal of the "Famous Five" statue of the group of women in Ottawa who fought for Human Rights on the back of the Journey $50 note. Perhaps that is why Viola Desmond was chosen to appear on the new $10? I don't know but the BOC actually consulted the public to choose out of a shortlist of candidates Canadians wanted to see on their new currency.

On the 1935 $10 it is Princess Mary; on the $20 it is Queen Elizabeth II (when she was a child (princess), and on the $2 it is Queen Mary.

IMO:
I think it is honourable that the BOC has put prime ministers on our notes and have employed various themes that matched the ethos of our times. When they used 2 Canadian PM's on their 1935 series (MacDonald on $500 & Laurier on $1000) -which most average Canadians would never even see- I'm sure there was a lot of grumbling of the upper class who may have came across them. But I'm sure they (& other anglophiles) got over it and came to see it as the norm.

I feel the designs, dimensions, materials (& now orientation) of our currency has reflected the emerging independence of our nation. To expect our currency to stay conservatively obsessed with English royalty would be a missed opportunity to reflect the true diversity of our people.

All through the Ontario school systems, there has not been a mention of MS. Desmond how ever great her accomplishment, I still say most Canadians until last year has never heard of her, even our present GG is by far more accomplished in my opinion only

My knowledge of historical events is limited. However,Viola on a bill beats Star Trek characters on a coin. (Even just NCLT coins)

Not quite the same as mentioned a NCLT coin is nearly forgotten with next months releases while our currency is for many years and it represents our long and proud traditions.

According to Wiki, Ms Desmond was a business woman from Nova Scotia. IMO it is a sad commentary on our government (and the theatre which started the conflict) tried to make it look like a case of tax evasion (apparently she was 1 cent short on her ticket admission!?) A judge later ruled that her incarceration was clearly racially motivated.

On a similar note, you won't hear much about Robert Baldwin (nor Louis LaFontaine) in most Canadian schools even though John Ralston Saul has argued that both should be attributed to nation building rather than John A MacDonald (& George Etienne Cartier). Baldwin & LaFontaine's fight for responsible government started well before 1867 & is fascinating stuff lost on most Canadians (& I really doubt we'll ever see them on our currency, though they were on a 1927 stamp).

I had no idea who Agnes Macphail (thought she was 1 of the famous 5) and James Gladstone were but now I have a good reason to find out. They are the other 2 people featured on the $10 Commemorative "150" note. I think its great that the BOC can inspire us to learn a lot more about our history (even if its not so pretty!) Again, in my opinion, when it comes to the contributions of women and our indigenous peoples, we have a LONG way to go in that regard.

Thanks for sharing.

So let me get this straight: it will be first released in Winnipeg and then elsewhere. Article is extremely vague about its release.

Does anyone have the new $10 yet? The CIBC main branch says the first week of Dec and the TD main branch says maybe next week. I think those are just guestimates though. The teller at TD asked if I'd checked the RCM. I politely explained that they come from the Bank of Canada.

I'm in Montreal, I managed to get half a bundle from the CIBC branch on Sherbrooke street. I'll post pictures later, but I can confirm that they are out.

My branch told me to check Friday and possibly again next week. They're being very non committal. Yesterday I went to BMO and they were very unhelpful and when she saw I wasn't too impressed she said she'd make a call (but I'll be surprised if I get much from them).
Thanks for sharing "CanadianCoins1999"
