odd penny found. its thicker and seems heavier than a normal penny. sides are thick making center look inlaid. reverse side building columns appear ridged and squared. copper appears to be chipping and warn. my son just sized with a dime and is the same size in circumference.

seems all the pictures I have are too big. so the above pic was the best I could do after lots and lots of frustration.

but any thoughts on this odd "coin jar" penny would greatly appreciated!

It is a Dryer Coin, meaning it got caught between the well and drum of a commercial dryer and the rim was beaten down.

Dryer coin. Note the obverse and reverse faces. They show damage there. If it was spooned it would probably not show damage on those areas.

People who try to make coin rings usually use silver coins.
