This is the reverse of an 1856 large cent that I got from a friend. I'm wondering what the diagonal indentations around the edge are from. I've seen them on some other large cents as well. They're not on the obverse: Edited by RubyOpal 03/11/2018 10:58 am

It's PMD (Post Mint Damage). Unless it's an extremely rare key date, I would not buy it.

Someone had some fun with it. Good for a conversation piece, not an investment though

Over the years, I've seen this cutting effect replicated on the rims of a handful of other coins. I've yet to hear of a plausible explanation for this damage.

The cuts have to have been made a long, long time ago, judging from the wear and color. Maybe someone was stealing bits of copper?

No, even back then the amount of copper would not make it worth stealing. Its a beat to heck large cent, of the sort I sell in my junk box for $7 a piece.
