Hey everyone!! I haven't been going through coins lately ..... ugh, but I did make time to grab a box of pennies the other day and was able to open about 3 rolls. I found this 1959 D penny & it looks pretty nice to me, but I don't know much or if anything at all about grading so here I am asking for your help! Thank you in advance!!
I'll give a quick lesson in grading. First determine is this uncirculated or possible a mint state coin. Is there any evidence of wear at all? Check the high points, lower coat, hair, rims, memorial fine details. the note the dings/and blemishes. We can determine yours is circulated by those criteria, therefore lower than MS (Mint state). Luster is only but one factor here, yours still retains enough "cartwheel" effect to show a strong remaining layer, an uncleaned coin as well. By using the Sheldon scale and method, the deduction of points per side averaged out, your coin is a bit shy of a near mint state grade but because of the slight wear puts it at the AU57 grade. Nice for a circulated coin!
