I was wondering if anyone knows what the "bumps" are on the reverse of this coin. You can see them right above the "L" and "F" in "Half" on the reverse. The obverse doesn't seem to be affected.

Thanks

I think they are pits; damage from someone going at the coin with a punch or somesuch. Why? Don't know. Damage.

Based on the way the coin appears to be lit from below those seem to be raised dots.
I'm wondering if it was an attempt to put an "O" mintmark there.

If they are raised, I don't know how they would have managed it. I thought about the clumsy attempt at a MM, too, but I figured "S" since there were nearly the same number of Philly and New Orleans issues that year. I still think they are incuse. Whatever was done, it's a sloppy job.

I have a Seated dollar with the same kind of marks, except more of them. I wondered if it was used to protect a surface, for example under a leather awl.

Probably someone goofing off with a punch, or perhaps even an old attempt at testing the precious metal content.

hits coming in at an angle from above pushing up a "hill" at the lower edge of the pit and those "hills" are catching the light being used to take the picture. That makes the pits look like raised lumps.

Conder101: that's what I was thinking. Next time I see it I'll know.
