I found this while I was cherry picking recently. It looks like a proof. By that I mean the shine is there and the color is a rich copper color versus the brassy color of the typical business strike. There is no mm and shows no evidence of there ever being one. The finish is the same on both sides. But the plating is worn through on most of the high places. I encluded photos of the coin in question next to a gemmy business uncirculated of the same year

So my question is what is this? I'm unsure. Did Philadelphia produce coins like this? Did San Francisco produce proofs with no mm in this year?

The coin in question has been circulated and shows faint scratches as well as the plating wear. I just used the nicest bu I had to compare to

It's been plated outside of the Mint (Post Mint Damage). Someone did a crappy job plating it, maybe a school science experiment?

There isn't any underlying plating. So I can assume it was stripped of the previous copper plating and the existing zinc core was replated?

JPinNH, I think you are correct. That's probably what happened since I can see the Zinc core exposed on the rims and letters. It appears to have been stripped of its original Copper plating and replaced with some other plating.

If it were a proof coin, the fields would be shiny and the devices and bust/building would be not shiny. It is an altered normal coin. (plated)

Cool. Thanks for the info. That makes two I've found. The other is a 1971 they brass plated. It's even worse than this one.think maybe I'll start a PMD plated collection lol

Why? They are just altered coins. Just worth face value. But it is your choice.

Some times for me it's not about the money it's about the neat factor as well as it's a good educational example of PMD plating
