Would you please grade this coin?

It has a blemish on Roosevelt's head that looks to me like there was a crack on the die. It is not a scratch...it extrudes from the surface.

Can any of you confirm or tell me otherwise?

In addition to grading it, can anyone tell me how this cracked die feature (or whatever it is) effects grading?......and value?

Note: if any of you should notice that the coin is in a different 2x2 in one pic versus the next it is because after shooting one set, I took it out to photograph it bare and those pics were horrible...all whited out....so I put it back into a new 2x2 to take another set and CENT size is all I had. It is the same coin.

The first set is a better representation of how bright and shiny it is but I think the second shows better detail so I included both.

Thanks.

I agree with you assessment that this is a die crack.

As to how it affects grading, it doesn't... It's just and added little bonus.

As to the grade of this coin, seeing as how there's a die crack I'm willing to bet that this is a fairly weakly struck coin. The amount of luster leads me to believe that it's a MS coin. However I've seen 55P's with more eye appeal, and better separation between the bands.

Others here might grade it as low as AU-50 depending on whether they think it's a worn die.

Anyway, I'd give it an overall grade of somewhere around MS 61-62. If that were it the coin would probably be valued somewhere in the $2 range. But the die crack adds a little bit more value (to me at least). How much is going to be determined by who's buying.

I collect MS roosies but generally stick to MS 63 and above. But that's a pretty neat error. I personally would offer you $5 or $6. Others might offer a little more. But for that amount of money I would suspect that you'd want to keep it in your personal collection as a "cool find".

It [i]is[s] a kind of cool find. It was in a Whitman folder. I also found 10x1964 UNC Lincoln Cents with a similar die crack (smaller though) which I posted in the Modern Coins Forum. https://goccf.com/t/31135

One person replied and I think he was telling was that for some reason they were very common in 1964...not 100% sure though.

Thanks for taking a look and for your information springcypress. You never know, It could show up in an auction here...I am anxious to try my first one. I inherited a fairly large collection, but I feel like I am leaning toward trading/selling/buying to end up with a smaller collection of better coins. I like the idea of having some nice slabbed gems...right now the whole collection is raw.

Hi

I think you can classify that as a long lean, Cud.
Seeing as it starts at the rim. Never saw one that long and that shape before. Maybe the Cud expert can chime in here.
By the way, I had to laugh (sorry:) when I was reading your post.
I.E.: Note:
I usually photograph my coins while dressed LOL..

Indian1...I photograph my coins "bare" just to scare the neighbors away. Seems to work!

Funny this coin should show up , two weeks ago at the shop several Roosevelt's came in for sale as silver. A couple were in 2x2's - One dated 1954 and labeled "Ducktail". I had never seen the variety , or heard of it (still have not looked it up anywhere yet) but I figured for melt price I would take the coin home and worry about it later. It seems to have the same die crack as your 1955 dated coin. I am guessing this must be a common area for die cracks on the Rosie's.

I do not actively collect them, but I grab anything out of the ordinary most of the time. Here's a pic of my 1954 so called "Ducktail"

As for grade, it does look weakly struck or worn dies (or both ) The obverse has a few small hits and that larger hit to the jawline- the reverse is nicer , but I don't think it is a "Split Band" coin- at least not in these pics. I would go MS-63, but I also like that die crack

There was also a 1964 dated Roosevelt labeled "Wart on Forehead" I grabbed . It has a small glob of extra metal on the forehead...no news on that one either..and sorry..no pics

InfiniteInterest - Thanks. I am glad you posted that. At first I didn't think much about it, but the coin has grown on me a little. Wierd that 2 years in a row, a die would crack in almost the same place. Thanks for replying!
