I have noticed sellers on ebay offering rolls of proof
State Quarters and ATB Quarters. With proof surfaces being so easy to scuff up, why would they sell them stacked on top of each other in rolls? Its funny that many sellers claim they take the coins out of proof sets with cotton gloves, and then proceed to stack them in a plastic tube where they rub against each other. What's up with that?

Dealers who know how to grade and what sells at what prices cherry pick the higher grades for NGC (less so for PCGS) and get paid for their effectiveness.

There are more proofs produced each year than will ever be collected, except for the super high grades.

Basically a way to dump what are actually culls.

Rims of coins are higher than the devices, stacking in rolls will not scuff the surfaces. The purpose of rims is to aid in stacking and protect the devices. If not for the protection by the rims of coins in rolls we would not have any circulation coins above MS66.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Maybe some of the put together proof rolls do have messed up coins, but the pictures of many of them on ebay look like very nice coins to me.

most rolls have impaired proofs in them, they have been cherry picked.

No matter how careful you are , a rim of one coin is bound to hit the field of another coin . Sorry but I'm just not a fan of Proof rolls .

Or it may simply be someone saying something they have no idea what a proof coin is.

@jmgi, this is exactly the same question I have. I would say that this is a very poor way to store and sell proof coins, as it is just a matter of a short time before they become impaired.

Even assuming that you stack them carefully (40 or 50 high), you have to get a tube/ roll around them and keep them from jostling one another. I could probably do that once or twice, then I would knock the whole stack over.

I agree.

Stacking proofs in plastic tubes is fine. People have been doing it for years.

With that being said, I understand if it is not your thing. Not really mine, either, but I am impressed with those who have built some nice stacks.

When we were going to shows, I used to buy rolls of proofs and put them in 2x2s to give away to the kids. 95% of them were gorgeous.
