Looks like a normal 1964-D type 'A' On this year and mint, there are only two year varieties. Type 'A' which is common. And Type 'C' which is the reverse for 1965. Yours does not have the strong tail feathers that are on the "type 'C'.

The type 'A' has the weak tail feathers:

On the 1956-1964 Philadelphia quarters, there are a type 'B' quarter. (only on philadelphia quarters) There are things to look for on these years from that mint. The spread on the last 'S' on STATES are what to look for on them:

These are found only on the 1956-64 quarter from Philadelphia. ( no mint mark) These were retired proof dies. So if you look a normal proof coin from that era, then you will know why they are different.

As far as varieties for the 1964-D quarter, there are also RPMs

and DDO

(Link doesn't have images yet, but a few are listed)
& DDR examples.

Hope this helps.

This is also a great reference I found a couple weeks ago. I plan to study it well when I have time.

For a RPM the ends of the mint mark that have splits on them are called serifs:

On doubled dies if there are devices that show spread, they are called notching:

But the notching is caused by the spread. If one device is affected, it usually is because of coin contact that made a mark in that area.

So splits on RPMs are called Serifs.
On doubled dies, the notching shows because of a spread.
