I have this well-travelled lowball dime. I think it is a Variety 2 (1828-1837) since it fits in the slot of my type album, where my 1827 Bust dime does not. I don't know if that's a defining attribute, though, since the Red Book implys that the earlier Bust dimes didn't have a uniform diameter. I think I can see the ghost of a 4 under the curl.
Any guesses as to the date? I'm kind of hoping it's 1834.

You cannot tell the date unless you can see the last two digits without a doubt as to what they are.

A is separated from M; F in OF is high; S13 very close to bust; last A does not touch arrow; first A lines up over or just left of serif of 2nd you in UNUM; last S in STATES is slightly low; IC in AMERICA are close together. 10C is large and the period is just left of the arrowhead.

1833: JR-1 is close, but last S in STATES is too high.

1832: hmm, JR-6 looks awful close...yup, gotcha.

1832 JR-6 (R-3)

Capped Bust Dimes are one of the series that can be fairly reliably identified by the reverse, even if the coin is dateless.

The same can be done for most CBQ and some CBH, but the CBH's have way more varieties to go through.
