Not coins of course but....

How many of you have realized over time you have so many coins that aren't primary focus of your collection and let things get a little messy? Well that's me.

Recently I had back surgery and have been laid up since early February. Bored as I am it gave me an opportunity to open up my large coin box of items that are just laying around. Like most of you I'm sure you have accumulated many items like wheat cents an they just pile up over time.

After collecting for more than fifty years the picture below shows what I'm starting to do to clean up the mess so to speak (wife's thrilled by this). I have thousands of wheat cents so I thought I'd start there. The picture below shows both wheat cents and Buffalo nickels and Jefferson nickels that were just laying in a box I use for collecting. The picture does not represent all of them but it is a start.

I spent hours putting them into year and mint marked based tubes labelling them so I know what's inside. It's helping me kill the time of being laid up with nothing to do.

Anyone else have the same issues? Has anyone begun to get organizing or have any suggestions on ideas for me to proceed? I'm hoping to get many suggestions as I have a long way to go..

I am currently trying to do the same thing.

The only advice that I can offer is that organization / documentation is the key.

I would go through coins, update spreadsheet, set them aside and then forget which ones I had updated!! I finally sorted, rolled and labeled them as you are doing and then put them in a coin box with a list of the contents on the outside of the box.

The other issue is deciding what to do with all of the extra's.

Good luck with the project and I fully understand how overwhelming it can seem.
Rest in Peace

When it came to wheats and memorials, those I wasn't interested in checking for varieties or hoarding, out the door they went. Same with Jeff and Liberty nickels and soon to be the Buffalo stashes. Mostly sell them, or just give them away. No one wants them in the family, they did no good sitting around, and could reinvest in coins I wanted/and liked.

Super Congrats on getting started!
I never seem to have the time as much as I would like to.
I don't have "a lot" of loose coins but have been trying
to get a complete inventory done for a long time now.
Life is just too busy for me to have "days" to go through
my collection like I want to. I commend you!!
Rest in Peace

An excellent approach as you now have the time to do this the way you want. My only suggestion might be to get the boxes that hold the square roll containers. They really help to keep everything in order.

The very best during your recovery. Remember if you find that box of Morgan's I left at your house I would like them back

Ill even send you the postage

Some great ideas in here thank you! Moxking, so sorry but I just can't seem to find those Morgans.. I'll keep pushing forward, I didn't realize they sell boxes for the square tubes. I'll have to look into that.

Looking good.

I do have some copper cent and nickel hoards that might be worth getting into tubes, but I am only keeping them so my progeny in the next generation or two will have something to sort through.
