Maybe stupid question, can a metal detector be accurate?

I probed this 1982-d and a 2017 and they both read as zinc. I also probed a Wheat penny which showed $.01/10

This means for sure that this 1982-d penny is zinc right? Thanks!

IMHO, easiest way to tell zinc from copper cents is to weigh them. Zinc should be about 2.5 g, while copper will be above 3 g.
