I bought some of these, others I'm curious as to people's opinion. This one I bought, it's come under scrutiny: 1917-d, type 1 This one I was going to bid on, but am holding off. 1917-p type 2 What do you think of this one? 1929-p I believe back: Thank you all for help.

That third picture is wrong, I copied the wrong one. It should be this:

1. AU details, cleaned 2. AU-53 3. GSC is excellent at taking photos that don't show signs of cleaning or damage, so I can't grade from the pics. Please post some better pics of it, other than GSC's.

Scrutiny for cleaning. I don't want to say what I paid exactly, but I am planning on getting a refund. Here is another one I am thinking of buying but it might be cleaned. It seems to have luster though. It is not slabbed.

Silver dollar, How much of a penalty is that over if it hadn't been cleaned? So it has AU details only? Thanks.

How does my second coin up there, the one I said I am "holding off on" not look cleaned? It has no luster, it looks like.

Trying to cherry pick raw coins on ebay without knowing how to grade and grade from photos is not going to end well. Nothing you've posted can be graded from those photos or single sided photos

basebal21,
I can estimate a grade, but all I have to go on obviously is e-bay's photos. I'm not trying to flip these for a profit, mostly though I want to know if they're cleaned. Like the first coin up there that I bought, how does one know it';s been cleaned?

I think I will buy a couple slabbed coins (although they're ridiculously expensive) instead of buying several non-slabbed coins and wondering if they've been cleaned. If I could tell if they've been cleaned, it'd be possible to buy VF-XF coins for much more reasonable prices and buy more of them.

The high end stuff, sure, but doesn't slabbing cost a good bit of money?

The 17 t-1 is eat up with hairlines. Appears to have been cleaned. The 17 t-2 has probably been cleaned but might be market acceptable. The 1929 actually looks pretty good at an angle but may look entirely different in hand, straight on. (Dirty fingernails holding coins in hyped up 2x2's....really? The owner should get a manicure or get some soap and water and wash up before posting on ebay!) The GSC coin probably looks entirely different in hand from what it looks like in the photo. They are well known in the community as a photo manipulator of raw coins. Until you become proficient with your grading skills tread lightly and make sure you have a return option.

westernsky, that's good advice. Maybe it's smarter to get a few nice slabbed coins and that's it. I originally got into it just to buy quarters and half dollars in good condition at close to melt value. IE a roll of barely circulated quarters at $130, when melt value is currently about $120. Less risk of misjudging a single coin. I will let you know how gsc coin works out.

1) MS/AU Details Cleaned 2) Do not bid on coin - look at the beads that are damaged near the rim where the word LIBERTY starts as could be a problem to resell. 3) Do not bid on coins photo graphed through plastic as you can not grade accurate. 4) When you receive the coin post your photos. 5) Too much lighting on coin to grade accurate. The coin is displaying excessive lighting not luster. Rule of thumb if I am going to spend over $200 on a coin, I want to purchase the coin in TPG plastic. It protects you against most counterfeits and problem coins.
