So I get my income tax money back, and instead of depositing it right away, I figure I'll get boxes of coins that I wouldn't otherwise be able to get with my limited capital. I bought a box of Twoonies and wouldn't you know it, I get several 2005 Twoonies that look wrong. (I'll get my wife's camera and take pics this weekend.) Compared to a normal Twoonie, the details aren't sharp at all, and the colour is off. (I'm colourblind, so all I can tell you is it's not right). Does anyone know of info on these counterfeits? I'm trying to find a picture online that I can compare with. (Until I can take pictures and upload them here.) Edited by Topher 06/12/2008 3:48 pm

Interesting...I'll look forward to seeing the pics. If those can be stamped out for 25c in Shanghai, there's probably a good incentive.

Sorry--I shouldn't assume everything's made in Asia. I'm guessing the fake reverse is on the right? close enough to fool many I'd think.

Yep, the fake is on the right. At first I thought it was a weak strike or strike through grease, but that just didn't seem to completely explain what I've got. Stay tuned, I will definitely put up some pics.

Fake twoonies! Wow. How many fake coins can these kids spend in a day to make their effort worthwhile? I mean after a couple sodas, chips, a burger maybe. Cigarettes & beer if they are old enough perhaps. I suppose you could cash in a few rolls here and there but then you'd be on every newspaper because of the cameras nowadays.
It's a matter of time before they are caught. Crime doesn't pay. And particularly this one.

Someone made fake Aussie $2 coins dated 2003 and offloaded them in and around Sydney. They are small and nobody looks at them closely. Some guy got caught passing a bag full in at a bank but it has been kept very hush hush here in Australia. Coins have gradually filtered out from Sydney through normal circulation and interstate tourists to other areas. Vending machines and gambling/poker machines are good ways to disperse such coins and change them for other currency coins.
I look forward to any more images and information.
Oh, our counterfeit $2 sells for around $40-60 (under the table) to collectors here. The crooks could have made more selling them to collectors LOL.

It makes sense when the person has a token/machine shop and low income, see Toper's article above. There are also fake UK coins too and fake Chinese 1 yuan coins. Why would anyone make a fake 15 cent USD coin? It is because there are many people in China who have extremely low income.
