Your coin is not a proof, it is not a crushed edge letter. (On the crushed edge letter proofs, the lettering is completely flattened showing as mere traces of itself. This was caused by the planchets being lettered first, and then struck in a smooth plain collar which crushed and smoothed out the lettering. The lettering will show is mere lines with no depth to them at all.) I'm sure the edge letter variations are mentioned in the Paisley book. The edge lettering was put on using two dies one contained the part of the inscription that read fifty cents or and the other die read half a dollar. If Castaining machine was not retracted all the way to its starting position, the lettering from the two edge dies could overlap on the coin. That is what is happened on your coin. It's kind of neat, but not all that unusual.
