I am new to collecting coins so I am confused if I should either keep low mintage coins before 1961 or just coins before 1961. (This is with nickels). What do you usually do?

Personally, as far US Nickels go, I keep everything below 1970.(I also keep the 70S). I wouldn't recommend keeping the 64's though. I only save them for rainy day funds. Most people from what I have heard keep everything below 1960.

If you are collecting by sorting rolls or boxes assembling a set of nickels plus earlier lower mintage issues is a good place to start. Also, the most valuable Jefferson nickels are errors and varieties so it's important to learn what you need to search for. You can learn a great deal of that right here.

Im sorry I made it a confusing question but I meant which should I keep them in better storage (i am on a budget so I will use 2x2s for the common ones) or treat them the same (all hard plastic storage)

Ah, I see. Well, depending on how much you search nickels, I would just keep the circulated common ones in rolls. The 2x2's will start piling up real quickly! I would put the AU/BU/Rare coins in either 2x2's or the airtites.

Yeah, I usually keep pre-1960, and those accumulate pretty quickly. Don't forget that 2x2s cost about a nickel apiece, so it's not really worth it unless you find a key date. I put buffaloes in rolls as well.

If you do alot of nickel roll searching they will pile up fast - I just use those plastic roll tubes with the screw on tops. Readily available on ebay or in quantities from Wizard coin supply

If they are the common date nickels, I toss them in a small bucket. Any key dates or what I call HTF, (hard to finds) I put in tubes. Once accumulating a couple hundred, sell them on ebay or coinbook. I'll toss in the HTFs and a couple war nicks to sweeten the pot. And no, I don't bother with the cracks, Cuds and cruds...I leave those for you guys!

I keep what appeals to me. Mostly the pre 70s in 2x2s or rolls. If you are going to error check get into the habit of coding your rolls or 2x2s. I mark them with EC for error checked. It gets confusing when you have several rolls. Yes I am a hoarder!

For sure keep all 1964 Nickels you can. If enough people on Earth do this, their value should go up to about 6 Cents each in a few hundred years.

I just keep pre- 60's - and all 68-70 S mint nickels for some reason even though they have high mintages!

I keep all coins I find before 1959. Don't know exactly why. Guess it has to do with the cent's design change. So to me, anything before 1959 is old and interesting; anything 1959 and after is new and common.
