Okay, this is just a story, not much to it really but I figured it would draw a few chuckles.
My daughter is going on 10 now and is getting a bit more independent and one of the things she seems to enjoy is staying home by herself when I need to run around town on errands or whatever. I carry my cell phone just in case but I'm still not okay with leaving her alone very long. I have laid down some rules (she isn't allowed to answer the door or phone, no cooking, etc.) and she seems to do pretty well so far.
A couple of days ago I went to the grocery store and she wanted to stay home, no biggie. Today is my birthday and fathers day is Sunday and she has been wound up about getting me something or doing something for me (although my requested gift of cleaning her room doesn't seem to have much appeal for her). I got back from the store and she had the kitchen counter full of all kinds of cups and bowls with water in them. As I came through the door she smiled real big and said "Happy Birthday Daddy, I cleaned your coins". Oh yeah, this is the entertaining part, I'm sure you can all guess what was going through my head at that moment. As my legs got weak and my head started swimming I stumbled to the counter to see what the damage was. I didn't see any open 2x2s or albums but she had a lot of coins sitting in water. Imagine my relief when she said she had found some nice, shiny new 2008 cents and figured she would clean up the rest of the coins to try to make them shiny as well..........THE COINS IN THE SPARE CHANGE JAR. YES
Needless to say I recovered nicely, thanked her, and we went over the rules dealing with THE coins again.

Whew! What a relief it didn't involve Brasso and an 1909-S VDB! Of course, kids are more a treasure than any coin, great story!

I had the reverse happen to me and it was a less than fortunate outcome. My father wanted my Whitman folder with a partial collection of Indian cents. Yep, you guessed it...he used baking soda and water to get all that "dirt" off. I was not very happy about what he did and told him that he basically made them next to worthless (they were basically common stuff already).

Happy Birthday and Father's Day!! I love your story and your daughter sounds like a little love bug with a big heart to want to give you something special for being her daddy. Glad she hit up your change and not your collection! Thanks for sharing, I needed a Smile story today!

LOL! Great story. A helpful hint, one of my rules with my five year old is do NOT touch my coins without my permission.

I think I crapped my pants for you. I do not have a big collection, or much value in it, but I would have had a tough time calming down if it was me. I have started collecting again over the last few months and I have made sure that my kids know which coins they can have, look at and not touch at all. I have been getting lazy with them lately and would have guessed my kids to do something VERY similar to this.
