Hi, what do you think about my newest buy? What grade would you give the coin (with rim damage or error?)? Thank you! <Edited to put images in post>Edited by DarkSun 06/13/2008 4:10 pm

I'd say AU55-58, rim ding makes it unlikely to get an MS rating. That is a beautiful coin.
Does the shield on the reverse have doubling on the left side or is that a shadow from the lighting used to take the picture?

It is a shadow.

Looks MS, and I can't tell if that is a rim bump or planchet flaw. is the edge of the coin smooth ?

Definately a rim bump which will keep it from a MS grade. Very nice coin otherwise. Without the rim bump MS60

Ok. And what do you think would be the grade without this nice rim bump?

Another question: Am I right, that this is the pointed bust variety?

yes you are correct, it is a pointed bust variety. you can view a picture of the rounded bust variety at the " Indian Head cent photos" link that is located directly below your original post.

Yeah, that's a nice one...AU 58 I would guess? Do these coins ever show wear on the tops of the headdress feathers or is that due to an inherently weak strike?

Rim bumps keep it from an MS grade? Really?
Otherwise, I'd say MS-62

Wear on an IHC obverse shows up first on hair above ear and hair curl to the right of the ribbon. A common poor strike characteristic is weak feather tips as seen on the 1860 IHC in the link provided by Dark Sun. Minor rim dings would not necessary prevent a coin from receiving a MS grade, But bold rim bumps will usually prevent them from being "slabbed" or graded as MS.
